Top Tips for Fireproofing Your Home

There are few disasters as devastating as a house fire. Not only can it destroy your home and everything in it, but it can also put your family at risk. That’s why it’s so important to take steps to fireproof your home. Here are some top tips to help you do just that:

1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.

2. Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with your family. Make sure everyone knows two ways to exit every room in the house.

3. Keep flammable items like lighters and matches out of reach of children.

4. Store flammable liquids like gasoline and cleaning products in safe, outside containers.

5. Never leave candles unattended.

6. Keep your fireplace and wood-burning stove clean and in good working order.

7. Don’t overload electrical outlets and extension cords.

8. Keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable items.

9. Don’t smoke inside your home.

10. Regularly check your home’s electrical system, including outlets, switches, and wiring.

By following these tips, you can help protect your home and family from the devastation of a fire.
