The Long-Term Effects of Unaddressed Water Damage

Water damage is one of the most common and costly problems faced by homeowners. According to the Insurance Information Institute, water damage and freezing accounted for more than one billion dollars in insurance claims in 2012, and the number of claims has been rising in recent years.

While the immediate effects of water damage are obvious, the long-term effects can be more insidious. Unaddressed water damage can lead to a number of problems, including:

Mold and mildew: Mold and mildew can begin to grow within 24 to 48 hours of water exposure, and can cause serious health problems, including respiratory problems, headaches, and skin irritation.

Structural damage: Water can weaken the structural integrity of your home, leading to problems like sagging ceilings, cracked walls, and foundation problems.

Health problems: In addition to the health problems caused by mold and mildew, water damage can also lead to the growth of bacteria and other harmful microorganisms, which can cause serious illnesses.

If you experience water damage in your home, it’s important to address the problem immediately to minimize the long-term effects. Be sure to dry the affected area thoroughly and remove any wet materials, such as carpeting, to prevent mold and mildew from growing. You should also have a professional inspect your home for any structural damage.
