The Importance of Disaster Preparedness for Tennessee’s Seniors

As our population ages, it’s important that we take extra measures to protect our seniors in the event of a disaster. Here in Tennessee, we’re especially vulnerable to tornadoes, flash flooding, and other severe weather. That’s why it’s so important to have a disaster preparedness plan in place.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when preparing for a disaster:

• Make sure your home is safe. Remove any loose items from your yard that could become projectiles in high winds. Keep your gutters clean and your trees trimmed. And, if you live in a flood-prone area, consider investing in flood insurance.

• Create an emergency kit. This should include enough food, water, and supplies to last you and your family for at least 72 hours. Be sure to include any prescription medications, as well as any special items for infants or seniors.

• Know your evacuation route. If you need to evacuate your home, know where you’re going to go and how you’re going to get there. If you have a car, keep a half tank of gas in it at all times. And, if you have a disability that requires special assistance, make sure you’re registered with your local emergency management agency.

• Stay informed. In the event of a disaster, local officials will provide updates and instructions on what to do via the news, social media, and other channels. It’s important to stay tuned in so you know what to do and when to do it.

By following these simple tips, you can help ensure your safety and the safety of your loved ones in the event of a disaster. For more information on disaster preparedness, please visit the following websites:
