The Importance of Disaster Preparedness for Tennessee’s Seniors

As our population ages, it’s important that we all take steps to ensure our safety in the event of a disaster. For seniors, this is especially important, as they may be more vulnerable to injuries and less able to evacuate quickly.

Disaster preparedness is a process of planning and taking steps to ensure that you and your loved ones are safe and have what you need in the event of an emergency.

There are a few things that every senior should do to be prepared for a disaster:

1. Create or update your emergency plan.

Your emergency plan should include a list of local emergency contacts, a meeting place, and a plan for how to evacuate if necessary. If you have medical needs, be sure to include them in your plan.

2. Assemble an emergency kit.

Your emergency kit should include enough food, water, and supplies to last you and your loved ones for at least 72 hours. Be sure to include items like a first-aid kit, a flashlight, and extra batteries.

3. Stay informed.

Keep up with the latest news and weather reports to be aware of any potential threats in your area. Sign up for emergency alerts from your local authorities.

4. Practice your plan.

Make sure everyone in your household knows the emergency plan and how to use the items in your emergency kit. Practice evacuating your home and meeting at your designated meeting place.

By taking these steps, you can ensure that you and your loved ones are prepared in the event of a disaster.
