When disaster strikes, the last thing you want to worry about is money. But if you’re not prepared, that’s exactly what you’ll have to do. The good news is, the State of Tennessee offers disaster tax relief programs to help ease the financial burden. Here’s what you need to know.
The first thing you should do is contact the Tennessee Department of Revenue. They will help you determine if you’re eligible for any relief programs. You can reach them by phone at (615) 253-0600 or by email at disasterrelieftax@tn.gov.
There are two main types of relief programs: those for businesses and those for individuals.
Businesses may be eligible for a sales tax refund on purchases made to replace damaged inventory or equipment. They may also be eligible for a waiver of the late filing or payment penalties for state business taxes.
Individuals may be eligible for a waiver of the late filing or payment penalties for state individual income taxes. They may also be eligible for an extension of the filing deadline.
To apply for either type of relief, you’ll need to complete and submit the appropriate form. You can find the forms on the Department of Revenue’s website.
When completing the forms, be sure to include all required documentation. This may include insurance claims, repair estimates, or other proof of damages.
Once the forms are submitted, the Department of Revenue will review them and determine if you’re eligible for relief. If you are, they will send you a letter confirming your eligibility and outlining the next steps.
If you have any questions about the disaster tax relief programs, or need help completing the forms, the Department of Revenue is here to help. You can reach them by phone at (615) 253-0600 or by email at disasterrelieftax@tn.gov.
