How to Keep Your Home Safe During a Flood

A flood can wreak havoc on your home and possessions, but there are steps you can take to minimize the damage.

Start by preparing an emergency kit that includes items like non-perishable food, water, a flashlight, and first-aid supplies. You should also have a plan for how to evacuate your family and pets if the water starts rising.

Once a flood is imminent, there are some things you can do to protect your home. Move any valuables and electronics to higher floors, and prop open doors and windows to help water drain out. If the water is already inside your home, try to turn off the power and gas to avoid fires or explosions.

And finally, once the floodwaters have receded, be sure to thoroughly clean and dry out your home to prevent mold and mildew from taking hold.
