How to Handle a Burst Pipe and the Ensuing Water Damage

If you come home to a burst pipe and resulting water damage, don’t panic. Take a deep breath and follow these steps to minimize the damage.

First, turn off the water at the main valve. This will stop the flow of water into your home.

Next, assess the damage. If the water is coming from a clean source, such as a faucet or toilet, you can probably clean it up yourself. However, if the water is coming from a dirty source, such as a sewage line, it’s best to call a professional.

Once you’ve determined the extent of the damage, it’s time to start the cleanup process. If the water is clean, start by mopping up as much water as possible. Then, use a wet/dry vacuum to remove any remaining water.

If the water is dirty, you’ll need to take a different approach. First, remove any porous materials, such as carpeting, that have been soaked. Then, use a disinfectant to clean the area.

Once the area is clean, it’s time to start the drying process. This can be done with fans, dehumidifiers, or a combination of both.

Finally, once the area is completely dry, you can begin repairs. If the damage is minor, you may be able to do the repairs yourself. However, if the damage is extensive, you’ll need to call a professional.

Burst pipes and resulting water damage can be a nightmare. But by following these steps, you can minimize the damage and get your home back to normal.
