A disaster supply kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.
Preparing a disaster supply kit ahead of time will help you be better prepared to face a range of emergencies, including severe weather events.
In Tennessee and northern Alabama, some of the disasters you may need to be prepared for include tornadoes, floods, and winter storms.
To build your disaster supply kit, start by gathering the following items:
Water: You should have at least one gallon of water per person, per day, for at least three days. Store your water in clean, sealable containers.
Food: Non-perishable food items that do not require cooking or refrigeration are ideal for your disaster supply kit. Choose items that are easy to eat and that you and your family will enjoy.
Flashlight and batteries: A flashlight can be used for signaling for help, as well as for illumination during power outages. Be sure to pack extra batteries as well.
First-aid kit: A first-aid kit is essential for treating minor injuries.
Multi-purpose tool: A multi-purpose tool can be used for a variety of tasks, including opening canned food, cutting rope, and more.
Manual can opener: If you are including canned food in your disaster supply kit, be sure to pack a manual can opener as well.
Cell phone and charger: A cell phone can be used to call for help in an emergency. Be sure to pack a charger as well, in case of a power outage.
Extra cash: In the event of an emergency, ATMs may not be accessible. Pack a small amount of cash in small denominations in case you need to purchase essential items.
Important documents: Keep copies of important documents, such as your driver’s license, passport, birth certificate, and insurance cards, in a waterproof and fireproof container.
Clothing and bedding: Pack a few changes of clothing and extra bedding, such as blankets and sleeping bags, for each person in your household.
Personal hygiene items: Personal hygiene items, such as soap, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products, are essential.
Prescription medications: If you or a member of your household takes prescription medications, be sure to include them in your disaster supply kit.
Pet supplies: If you have pets, pack food, water, and any other essential supplies they may need.
Toiletries: Toiletries, such as toilet paper and hand sanitizer, are essential.
Tools: Tools, such as a hammer and screwdriver, can be used for a variety of tasks, such as turning off utilities.
Once you have gathered all of the items for your disaster supply kit, store them in a convenient location, such as a closet or garage, and be sure to check and replenish your supplies on a regular basis.
